Team Tag Card Games

Wanna play? Well grab a mate or two and get stuck into these fun games. It's a great way to win more Team Tags and boost your knowledge about the All Blacks.

Rugger Grubber

What you need to play

  • Two or more people.
  • At least four Team Tags per person.
  • A coin.

The game

  1. Everyone starts with the same number of Team Tags and lays them down, player side up, as if setting their attacking line.
  2. Each person turns over one tag:
    • The aim is for your players to be in the best position to chase a grubber kick and score a try. But you won’t know where the grubber kick will end up  until you flip the coin. Will it be a long grubber kick to the Backs (heads) or a short one to the Forwards (tails)?
    • If you think it’ll go long, turn over more tags and add up each player number for a higher total than anyone else. But remember, you’re risking more tags to try and win. But, if you think it’ll be short, don’t move - you’ll want the tag with the lowest player number.
  3. Now flip the coin:
    • If it’s heads, the grubber kick has gone long – out to the Backs. The person with the highest combination of player numbers scores the try.
    • If it’s tails, the grubber kick has gone short – just past the maul. The person with the lowest number scores the try.
  4. The winner keeps their tag(s) on the field, placing them player side up on an angle in the line-up. These tags can only be used after resting for one round. The losing tags are taken off the field, out of play for the rest of the game.
  5. Repeat play until there’s only one person left with tags on the field. Everyone then gathers their tags back again to play another game.

Throw Down

What you need to play

  • Two or more people.
  • At least four Team Tags per person.
  • Pen and paper.
  • A coin.

The game

  1. Everyone starts with the same number of Team Tags. Now, flip each tag into the air like a coin. The ones that land with their numbers up are kept in the game. All the others are taken off to the sidelines.
  2. Each person then adds up their player numbers.
  3. Now you’re ready to find out who wins!
  4. Flip the coin:
    • If it’s heads, the highest total wins.
    • If it’s tails, the lowest total wins.
  5. The winner receives the difference in points between the highest total and the lowest total. You can record your score with pen and paper.
  6. Keep playing until the first player reaches 100, or whatever number you’ve decided to play to.

ABF (All Blacks Facts)

What you need to play

  • Two or more people.
  • At least three Team Tags per person.

The game

The stats for each player can be found on the back of your Team Tags.

You can use Weight, Height, Test Points, Test Caps or All Blacks No.

  1. Stack your Team Tags in your hand, player side up.
  2. To start the game, one person chooses a stat from their first tag to challenge everyone e.g. Test Points.
  3. Everyone checks their first tag, reading out the stat from their tag e.g. Test Points.
  4. The person with the highest stat wins i.e. most Test Points, Tallest, Heaviest, most Test Caps and most recent All Blacks No. This person keeps their tag in play by moving it to the back of their stack. All other players lose that tag, placing it on the sidelines.
  5. The winner chooses a new stat to start another round. Remember, you can’t play the same stat two hands in a row!
  6. The game continues until only one person has their tags left in play.
